- Isometric map conversion
Wed Apr 14 11:48:44 EDT 2021
I'm currently working on converting our map system to isometric, to enable us to see each other walking around, view npcs, items, etc.
The reason is, I think it'll be more immersive, plus, it ties in nicely with adding support for territorial ownership by guilds, new raiding functionality, player property ownership, mining, fishing, pets, and so on.
I don't have a lot to show yet, but I'll update this thread as I progress. At the moment I have:
- Implemented data interchange format for storing/sending map data to browsers.
- Browser-side renderer that can draw the maps.
I have some issues with camera tracking and sprites to sort out, but it's going fairly well. Worst bit is out of the way now. Should be able to have maps of at least 100x100x50 without incident, plus stairs/ramps that can be ascended. Hopefully it'll make things more interesting.
There may be some concern over existing legacy maps, but I'm not worrying about that for now. There is probably a way to convert them automatically, or I can refund the points to creators, and/or spin off a "cla**ic" version of game. But again, not getting hung up on that for now, bigger fish to fry.
Edit:
More progress:
More progress:
- Spritesheets with animated sprites to bind to players, NPCs, actions on map working now.

I would hope that peoples efforts dont get lost over bigger fish!

I'm kind of on the fence about this one... On the one hand all the maps and tilesets and NPC types would be completely erased? I wouldn't mind being able to spend the points on higher level monsters and bosses, but still seems like I would have a lot of work lost.
Just curious though, would the images be made obsolete as well or would they be allowed to transfer over to the new system? Some of those images I spent quite a bit of time on, and a lot of the ones I spent time on have not even been added to the game yet.
Hows it going, and have fun.

As it stands, only the tilesets will change, everything else will stay the same.
It's possible that this change is too drastic and perhaps necessitates making another realm of the game, or a FutureRP Cla**ic, or some other solution. I don't want anyone to lose out on any effort or points, so I'm sure we can find a solution.
tl;dr, I know I've spooked you with this thread, but I wouldn't worry about it too much at the moment
Edit: Might also be possible to just automatically convert existing maps into flat isometric ones. They'd look pretty much the same as they do now. Plenty of options.

Sorry I'm still not really sure specifically what isometric even means. Will it be more 3d and have you moving around the map like 1st or 3rd person? I'm guessing the walls will extend upwards so that it looks like you're actually traversing a room?
