I'm not sure if this has been said before.
Difference between character types could be easily done. A difference in percentage in a stat.
e.g. One gets 10% extra speed of, another 10% extra hp and so forth.
Spending 150 points to change character type might have a point besides position on the top 20.
Another idea could be, each character type has an advantage over another character type in PvP.
this way players could feasibly attack someone higher, if of the right character type.
Just some ideas, feel free to comment or elaborate, or detract

I have posted before an idea where each race would get a bonus to a certain attribute. Instead of just a % bonus, however, it was based on a attribute point allocation system. Similar idea though.
As far as one race having an advantage over another, I don't think anything specifically like that has been mentioned, but I did find an older thread where someone proposed that each character would have an elemental affinity. Each element would be strong against one and weak against another element. Either idea could work though.
