Well, there does seem to be a distinct pattern here. I'm tempted to reboot the server, to see if that shakes loose whatever is causing the problem.
Failing that, I'll put in a support ticket at the datacentre. The strange thing about this issue is that:
- It isn't a**ociated with any noticeable CPU/HDD usage spike.
- It isn't the ping.
- It isn't the download speed.
- It happens with static files too, so it's not a php/mysql issue, at least not directly.
- It seems to randomly add seconds to the response time of a page load, but not the processing time of the script, or the time it took to make the initial request.
So basically, the moment the server gets your request, it replies at normal speed.
I was tempted to blame this on a DNS issue, but I've ran test lookups a few times, and it's near-instant.
The last time this happened, it was a router issue at the datacentre, but given that it's happened for weeks now, I can't help but think it's something else this time
I'll just reboot it and

The effect we're experiencing is not tied down to specific pages. It affects all HTTP requests, intermittently, and only for a small number of people, and not always at the same time

Was able to go through the SKK without lag. Which is actually surprising, even before I would experience at least some lag.

I'm getting some lag too. Just came back from a reboot and when I start out it's going fine, and the more I go (within 100 attacks) everything has slowed to a crawl.

I'll try rebooting the whole thing tonight. It hasn't been rebooted in a long time. I hope it comes back up
