You can make the body space gray or red, and show that the item equipped dont give the stats. If the player get back, he see that and have to level up agen, or change items from the backpack
to get the bonuses provided by equipped items
That's not a bad idea.
It would involve adding a 'disabled' flag to the items, but it is the most sensible idea yet
